Woo...So, Jessica Care Moore. She's one of those people that touches you once and you're never quite the same afterwards. I don't keep up with her. I don't know anything about her. I just know that when I was a teenager, I caught her on Showtime @ The Apollo one night, and it changed the way I viewed myself. It made me think more, hope more, and expect more of myself.

She won like a bazillion times and I'm sure she holds some record still today. This was the first poem I heard her recite and I remember printing the words to this and memorizing it. I still know it by heart:

Let her eat what she wants, and lounge around with her man Jermaine in Atlanta all she wants. She deserves the break after singlehandedly helping countless couples reproduce in the 90s. You or someone you know conceived 2 or 3 of your children on this song alone...

i remember going across town in Dallas when this album came out, and getting it on vinyl. yep. vinyl y'all. it was a big deal. 2pac was in jail and this single was the best thing my ears/soul had heard in a long time. years later, its still as touching. it still makes me think of my brother and my mom and how we lived when i was growing up. gotta love this...
