Woo...So, Jessica Care Moore. She's one of those people that touches you once and you're never quite the same afterwards. I don't keep up with her. I don't know anything about her. I just know that when I was a teenager, I caught her on Showtime @ The Apollo one night, and it changed the way I viewed myself. It made me think more, hope more, and expect more of myself.
She won like a bazillion times and I'm sure she holds some record still today. This was the first poem I heard her recite and I remember printing the words to this and memorizing it. I still know it by heart:
("Black Statue of Liberty")
That was followed the next week by "Black Girl Juice," which still blows my mind.
That was more than 10 years ago I'm sure, and here's something more recent:
It's a shame they have Janet Jackson on the cover of magazines talking about how much weight she's gained recently. Leave the bitch alone. Let her eat what she wants, and lounge around with her man Jermaine in Atlanta all she wants. She deserves the break after singlehandedly helping countless couples reproduce in the 90s. You or someone you know conceived 2 or 3 of your children on this song alone...
Ha, that takes me back. Jennifer Lopez was ethnic. Cassette tapes...existed. Janet called people "boo." Shawnette was still "straight."
It's a shame this vid clip has an audio sync problem. Cause even though Gina and Pam are actin' a fool, it's a rare chance to see just how great these two women can SANG!
Remember before Martin even thought about havin' a tv show, Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold were workin' it OUT in "Little Shop of Horrors":
