Woo...So, Jessica Care Moore. She's one of those people that touches you once and you're never quite the same afterwards. I don't keep up with her. I don't know anything about her. I just know that when I was a teenager, I caught her on Showtime @ The Apollo one night, and it changed the way I viewed myself. It made me think more, hope more, and expect more of myself.
She won like a bazillion times and I'm sure she holds some record still today. This was the first poem I heard her recite and I remember printing the words to this and memorizing it. I still know it by heart:
("Black Statue of Liberty")
That was followed the next week by "Black Girl Juice," which still blows my mind.
That was more than 10 years ago I'm sure, and here's something more recent:
It's a shame they have Janet Jackson on the cover of magazines talking about how much weight she's gained recently. Leave the bitch alone. Let her eat what she wants, and lounge around with her man Jermaine in Atlanta all she wants. She deserves the break after singlehandedly helping countless couples reproduce in the 90s. You or someone you know conceived 2 or 3 of your children on this song alone...
Ha, that takes me back. Jennifer Lopez was ethnic. Cassette tapes...existed. Janet called people "boo." Shawnette was still "straight."
It's a shame this vid clip has an audio sync problem. Cause even though Gina and Pam are actin' a fool, it's a rare chance to see just how great these two women can SANG!
Remember before Martin even thought about havin' a tv show, Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold were workin' it OUT in "Little Shop of Horrors":
I just found David Sides today on youtube. He has more than 30 video clips of his renditions of various popular songs. Here are 3 of my favorites...
Ciara's "Like a Boy"
Coldplay's "Clocks"
Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around Comes Around"
you can get lots more info, including info on how David plays all of these songs BY EAR!! on his myspace page @ www.myspace.com/davidsides. tell him you found him on Your Daily Ebony Moment...
ok...remember coming home from 7th grade, taking your backpack off, falling back on your bed and pushin' "play" on the cd/tape player combo you had (you know you did)...and this song coming on...
...chased all your school blues away, didnt it? :-)
yeah we all figured he was gay--and some of us figured WE were gay too--but it didnt matter. you still bought Word Up! magazine and put his mini posters on your wall. and you still answered back when he sang, "can we talk...for a minute?"
"just lookin' out of the window, watchin' the asphalt grow
thinkin' how it all looks hand-me-down
GOOD TIMES! GOOD TIMES!
keepin' your head above water, makin a wave when you can

GOOD TIMES...

GOOD TIMES! aaaaahhhh. yeah."
hmmm...ok...really? those were good times? the time when wanda had to eat cat food cause she couldnt afford to pay her rent, good times? when j.j. got shot. good times? when penny got burned with the iron. good times? when that blind dude ripped off the evans' with that encyclopedia scheme? good times?
member when michael failed that test cause it was made for white kids? good times?
member when thelma had that crackhead friend who would get high/drunk in their bathroom? good times?
and speaking of the bathroom. i could never figure out where everyone slept. cause what i saw were two doors. one door led to the parents' room. and one led to the bathroom. was thelma's room supposed to be on the other side of the bathroom? did you have to go to the bathroom, then go through a secret passageway to get to her room? im just sayin.
and wilona. gotta love wilona. i wish when i came over to my friends house for a couple of minutes, they'd all clap for me when i left. that'd be hot.
and why did the mama always YELL her lines? and then her voice cracked at the end of each sentence?
i liked james though. he and wilona were the only ones who could act.
i remember going across town in Dallas when this album came out, and getting it on vinyl. yep. vinyl y'all. it was a big deal. 2pac was in jail and this single was the best thing my ears/soul had heard in a long time. years later, its still as touching. it still makes me think of my brother and my mom and how we lived when i was growing up. gotta love this...
"Dear Mama"
something about the way he describes his tv really tugs at my heart. take a picture, i dont get this sentimental very often:-)
